1. The sun was at it’s highest, like a vicious unblinking yellow eye stares down at me from the cloudless sky. The heat beat down on my head like I was bacon under the grill. I could almost smell myself cooking.

译文：

太阳处于最高点，就像一只恶毒的、不眨眼的黄眼睛从无云的天空中凝视着我。我的头热得像烤架下的熏肉一样。我几乎能闻到自己被烤熟的味道。

2. In the unrelenting glare of midday the only shadow is that which pools at my feet. The strong sun on my white hair will burn me in minutes if I don't find shelter.

3. In this heat even the trees appear defeated. Leaves that should be firm and upward tilting droop, flaccid as old lettuce. The soil isn't simply dry, but powdery to the touch.

4. At midday everything shuts down. The market holders have gone, the streets are bare. Even the police are gone, back the station. Who's going to rob now? Running at these temperatures would just bake your lungs.

5. I strolled up a large hill as the summer breeze pushed past. Looking up, I saw the sun shine brighter than I ever knew before. I saw a tree in the distance glisten gently as it reflected the sun's rays. My consciousness ebbed away with the heat. I took a few blinks before I landed with a thud.

译文：
