第一节 (共 10 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 20 分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C 和 D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
I think the biggest difference between middle and high school is the homework load (工作量 ) and size of the school. I went from maybe fifteen minutes of homework a night to several hours, so I had to learn how to make full use of time! Our class size is around 550, but joining in clubs, sports, music, and other activities at school makes it easier to get to know people in every grade.
The best advice I can give about the years you spend in high school is to learn things for yourself, not just to get a good grade. There have been so many tests that I've prepared for the night before. I have gotten an A, and not remembered anything later. I've changed that this year, and I enjoy school so much more. Don't take easy classes just to have a simple year. If you have a choice between chemistry and sports, the first will prove to be a lot more useful!
While drinking and smoking might be present in some middle schools, they're also around in high schools. I have a lot of friends who promised they'd never drink or smoke, but are now partying every weekend. If you have "fun" and spend your nights wasted instead of studying, you will regret it when you're applying for (申请) college. The "friends" who say you're a loser for not partying are really not your friends at all. It's hard to see your closest friends grow apart and go in different directions, but don't follow their footsteps. Create your own path in life and make your own decisions.
36.What does the author think of high school?
A. It requires hard work.
B. There are very few activities.
C. It's hard to meet new people there.
D. There isn't enough time for homework.
37.The author advises high school students to .
A.give up sports
B.choose useful classes
C.try their best to get good grades
D.get ready for tests the night before
38.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A.The importance of making friends.
B.Not losing ourselves in high school.
C.Not going to any party in high school.
D.The trouble caused by drinking and smoking.
B
To most of us, school means classes, teachers, schedules, grades and tests. But for the children at Sudbury Valley School, Massachusetts, school is very different.
Firstly, there are no lessons. All the children, aged between 4 and 19, do whatever they want to. There are no teachers —only "staff members". The idea behind this is that you do not need to make children learn, because children want to learn anyway. "You do not need to say to a three-year-old, 'Go to explore your environment.' You can't stop them!" says Daniel Greenberg, a founder of the school. "But if you make children do what you want all day, they will lose all taste for learning."
At Sudbury Valley School, you will permit children to talk, read, paint, cook, work on computers, study French, play the piano, climb trees, or just run around. Two boys spent three years just fishing!
The other way that Sudbury Valley School is different is that the children can decide the rules. Every week, there is a school meeting where both children and staff have one vote each—even the four-year-olds. They decide the school rules, how to spend the school budget, and even which staff they want and do not want any more.
When the school first opened in 1968, people said it would never work. But today, the school has 200 students, and 80% of its students go on to college. Even the two boys who went fishing all the time have successful careers today. One of them is a musician and the other is a computer scientist.
39.What is the main topic of the article?
A. An unusual school.
B. Children's hobbies.
C. A school without rules.
D. Education in the US.
40.What does the school believe?
A.Teachers cannot teach children well.
B.Children learn best by doing what they want.
C.Learning is for adults rather than children.
D.Children should do what teachers tell them.
41.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Parents well accepted the school.
B.Some students have been ignored.
C.Fishing is good for students' study.
D.The school's idea succeeds in some way.

Some students get so nervous before a test. They do poorly even if they know the material. Sian Beilock, a professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has studied these highly
anxious test-takers. The students start worrying about the results. And when they worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources (资源) .
Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test.
The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave them two short maths tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test.
Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of 12% worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of 5%. Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test. Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+, compared to a B-for those who did not.
"What we showed is that for students who are highly test-anxious, who'd done our writing intervention (干预), all of a sudden there was no relationship between test anxiety and performance. They were performing just as well as their classmates who don't normally get nervous in these tests."
But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam? Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.
42.What may the students start worrying about before an exam?
A.Whether they can pass the exams.
B.What other students do during the test.
C.Whether they have remembered the materials.
D.What kind of problems they will meet on the test paper.
43.What is the solution developed by researchers?
A.Asking the students to ignore the test.
B.Asking the students to focus on the test.
C.Asking the students to sit quietly before the test.
D.Asking the students to write about their worries before the test.
44.According to Professor Beilock, those who thought about things unrelated to the test .
A.became less nervous before the test
B.were better at controlling their feelings
C.did worse than those who wrote about their feelings
D.did better than those who wrote about their feelings
45.What can be learned from the last paragraph?
A.Writing about our worries before an exam can work a bit.
B.We can only write about our worries right before an exam.
C.The best place to write about our worries is in the test room.
DIt doesn't matter where we write about our worries before an exam.

There are about 7,500 apple varieties in the world. While 2,500 of those varieties are being grown in the United States, the Gala,Fuji, and Honeycrisp varieties occupy American market.Instead of sticking to the familiar, here are other delicious apples to try this fall. These special fruits will be the apple of your eye.
Cosmic Crisp
A cross between Honeycrisp and Enterprise, the Cosmic Crisp takes the best qualities of both of these apples and combines them into a delicious and juicy apple. It's perfect eaten plain, but when used in an apple pie, it maintains its firmness, making it a great apple for baking.

The Swee Tango, as a cross between a Honeycrisp and a Zestar apple, takes on flavors of honey and a bit of orange. Usually in apple recipes, other materials are added to improve the apple flavor, but the Swee Tango stands strong on its own. So it's the perfect apple for apple-centric dishes such as apple pie, and even baked apples.
Ginger Gold
With a golden-green color, the Ginger Gold apple is pretty mild in flavor with a bit of ginger as mentioned in its name. This variety is fully grown a bit earlier than most other apples with their season beginning as early as August. So,if you're eager for fall, then the Ginger Gold is the perfect apple to start baking your favorite fall treats.
RubyFrost
Grown classically as one of American varieties, the RubyFrost allows apple lovers the chance to enjoy this sweet fruit through the winter months. Not only can the RubyFrost stand a bit of cold weather, they reach their finest flavor during the winter months, making it a great, late season apple.

Enya Vegnere, 19,left Joshua Henry,25,speechless when she used her own bank card to pay for his food at a drive-through. In a video posted online by Joshua,Enya was filmed paying for his meal after he phoned his mum to ask if she wanted anything from McDonald's. In the video,Joshua can be heard asking the worker,"So you're gonna pay for my meal?" Enya replied,"Yeah, for your care about your mum."
Joshua didn't expect to get a free meal, but it properly cheered him up after having a depressing day with the fact that he was at high risk of a job cut. Joshua got in touch later to express thanks. He said it made his week.
Enya, who has worked at MeDonald's since January, is paid £ 7.25 per hour but has spent more than £ 50 on random acts of kindness to customers in secret for months. Thus, she loves her work and work team, where everyone goes above and beyond.
Some people do kind things with the expectation that they will get something back in return but that's not Énya's way. Her motto is "takers eat better but givers sleep better". She doesn't do it for recognition but thinks of it as nice things for people.Joshua had already paid forward the act of kindness.Later, he bought a meal for the person in front, who was also thankful and intended to pay it forward.

There's been lots of concern recently about the potential dangers of microwave popcorn(爆
米花),but is this concern founded,or just overmuch fear-spreading? The answer is that many
of the chemicals that caused worry in earlier decades have been removed from microwave popcorn, but some critics still are not satisfied.
"You may consider popcorn to be a low-calorie,high-fiber snack, but microwave popcorn isn't a healthy choice," explains nutrition expert Dan DeFigio. That's because microwave popcorn bags were coated with perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) to prevent oil substance from leaking out.One particular type of PFC, known as perfluorooctanoic acid ( PFOA),has been linked to certain cancers, but the American Cancer Society says the evidence is unsure and more research is being done about this.
Nevertheless, in response to concerns about PFCs,the U.S.Food and Drug Administration(FDA) worked with popcorn makers back in 2011 to remove PFOA from their packaging.Three more PFCs were banned in the next five years. So today's microwave popcorn doesn't have these
chemicals, but critics say that the alternatives could cause problems as the old ones, but less is known about them.
That's not the only problem, however. The chemical that for decades lent buttery deliciousness to popcom has also been connected in rare cases with major lung damage.Known as diacetyl(二乙酰),it's long been a documented problem with workers in popcorn making facilities, but also can be risky for people who just eat the snack a lot. A 2007 study published in the journal Critical Reviews found that more than 80 percent of chemical release happened when the bag was opened post-popping. Although diacetyl has been removed from most products, some critics claim that the alternative to diacetyl is also harmful.
Most of the exposure(接触)to diacetyl came from inbreathing rather than eating popcorn. Therefore, experts recommend at least waiting for the bag to cool before you open it to reduce potentially harmful chemical exposure. Better yet, make your own fresh at home with an air
popper. If you like to flavor it, add organic butter or some cheese.
28. What can we know about PFOA from the text?

D
"Let's go to grandpa's room and see if it still smells funny," said Tommy.
"Last time it smelled like cheese..." replied Lil.
Sure, these lines from"Rugrats", a cartoon senies that aired in the 1990s,were meant to be funny. But they also may have a basis in real life, relating to the widely held view that the elderly send out a particular and easily recognizable body odor(气味)。
The smell has been described as unpleasant, or simply "old person".In one study, Japanese researchers traced the odor to a chemical compound(化合物)called 2-nonenal.The compound is a byproduct of other chemical breakdowns and sends out a "greasy" or"grassy" odor as the molecules(分子)exit the skin and are released into the air. Researchers discovered that 2-nonenal was the only odor compound whose presence became stronger with age.
In the study, in which 22 people aged between 26 and 75 were asked to wear odor-collecting shirts to bed, researchers analyzed molecules that stuck to the cloth. The amount of 2-nonenal was three times as much in the oldest subjects as it was in the middle-aged group. The youngest members of the study produced the least amount of 2-nonenal. Researchers assume the increase in 2-nonenal may have a lot to do with the breakdown of omega-7 unsaturated fatty acids(不饱和脂肪酸),because these molecules were also present in the shirts worn by the study's oldest subjects.
Although the biological purpose behind "old person" smell is still unclear, some researchers believe it's connected to a built-in age-detecting feature possessed by humans and animals. For instance, some animals can distinguish between older and younger animals by smell alone, and some animals are driven to mate with older animals. I's possible that the capability to tell the smell of older animals meant that long-term survivors were revealed and these survivors had a genetic(基因的)advantage that boosted their chances of survival. In truth, the scent called "old person" smell could be an advertisement for better genetic quality. It gives a whole new meaning to the term "silver fox".
32.Why does the author use the lines from Rugrats?
A.To amuse readers.
B.To introduce the issue.
C.To recommend a TV series.
D.To analyze a phenomenon.
33.What did the Japanese researchers find in the study?
A.2-nonenal is on the rise with age.
B.Omega-7 gives out a "greasy" or "grassy" odor.
C.The youngest subjects produce the most amount of 2-nonenal.
D.The rise in 2-nonenal has little to do with the breakdown of omega-7.
34.What is the new meaning given to the term "silver fox"?
A.Old and smelly.
B.Greasy and grassy.
C.Better and advantageous.
D.Clever and knowledgeable.
35.What is the purpose of this text?
A. To advocate respecting the elderly.
B.To explain the causes of old people's body odor.
C.To prove the advantages of "old person" smell.
D.To clarify the biological purpose behind "old person" smell.

Clearly, a kind stranger reached out to tell him that his beloved cat was safe and sound and couldn't wait to see him again!
The cat went missing years ago, right before Robert was planning on moving from California to Ohio. The sad owner decided to give up his plans and stayed in California for the whole year looking for his missing friend, but in vain. "I remember at one point I was praying and I said, 'God, I'll do anything, just bring my Chebon back…'", Robert said in a video posted on the Ventura County Animal Services. The cat seemed to have disappeared forever and Robert had no other choice than to move on.
Then 7 years later, a woman noticed a cat that looked ill, so she decided to catch the animal and take him to the vet (兽医). Luckily, the cat she found had a microchip (微型芯片), and in an instant, they knew who the owner of the 19-year-old cat was. That's when Robert received a call saying that his cat was alive.
"I was afraid there was some kind of mistake," Robert said in the reunion video. The man decided to ride on a plane and fly all the way from Los Angeles to see his old friend. Binge-watching (追剧) your favorite TV series is bad for your brain. Dr. Randall Wright, based in Texas, said the need to watch episode (集) after episode has a similar influence on the brain to gambling (赌博). What's more, it often leads to social loneliness, snacking on junk food and a shortage of exercise and sleep, which, over time, is bad for the brain.
When you let auto play start the next episode, you can find out what happens next and your brain receives good feedback, Dr. Wright wrote in an article. This right-away satisfaction is similar to gambling where even after a win, you are not satisfied and want to continue playing. With binge-watching, you are not satisfied with stopping after episode five and want to continue watching. This cycle coupled with the snacking and the long time sitting can lead to unhealthy changes in your brain and body over time.
Dr. Wright said, "Binge-watching itself is not bad. It becomes problematic when you are watching a third, fourth or fifth episode instead of doing healthy activities." But he said it is possible to avoid the bad influence of binge-watching with four tips, including staying away from salty, fatty, calorific foods, exercising before a binge-watching, setting an alarm for sleep and balancing TV viewing with socializing.
If you add these tips to your binge-watching practice, you can create lasting healthy habits and still enjoy the now-and-then binge-watching time without hurting your brain.
29. What might "it" in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Gambling. B. Binge-watching. C. TV series. D. Brain.
30. In what way is binge-watching like gambling?
A. The long time sitting. B. The changes of feeling.
C. The snacking on junk food. D. The immediate satisfaction.
31. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The tips on how to develop a healthy lifestyle.
B. The reasons why binge-watching is problematic.
C. The ways to keep away from binge-watching.
D. Do's and don'ts of binge-watching.
32. What may be the best title of the passage?
A. Ill Health: The Result of Addiction
B. Healthy Habits: A Must of A Better Life
C. Binge-watching: A Killer of Your Brain
D. TV-Viewing: Gradual Harm on Your Health

When Emma first announced about a month ago that she wanted to cut off all her hair, I cried. Not in front of her, of course. In front of her ,1 asked why and then told her to find a picture on the Internet that she could show to a hairdresser.
And then I went to the shower and cried. I cried not because she wanted to cut her long hair, but because she wanted to "cut it all off like a boy". For some reason, that was the straw (稻草)that broke the dam.
Emma hasn't worn dresses since she was two. She hates them. Now, at ten, she's usually wearing mesh(网状)shorts and a packers T-shirt or jersey(运动衫)一or something old and stained and acquired for free. When she's "dressing up" she wears skinny jeans and a plaid(格子图案的)button-down with her black and green Converse high-tops.
I admit her fashion sense has always made me a little sad. When I found out I was having a girl, I ran home and painted the nursery two shades of pink while fantasies of girls' weekends and shopping trips were dancing in my head .I'd teach her how to do her hair and paint her nails. I couldn't wait to start the journey with my very own mini-me. But it turns out you don't give birth to dolls, and instead of a mini-me. I got a completely separate and independent human being with ideas and dreams of her own. And yes, that made me a little sad.
It also makes me extremely proud, although I've fought hard against the label tomboy(假小子). I've always been in the pride of my daughter's strong sense of self and amazed at how early it developed. She has been refusing dresses since before she could speak!"

It warmed my heart today to walk into the Thirsty Camel downtown in the Thanksgiving Day, for a
quick lunch before a haircut and library trip. Ihan, a food shop owner, said that he was refusing to take money today because it was Buy Nothing Day. To increase awareness(意识) of the strange over spending nature of our society, Ilan suggested a trade for food today. He simply asked that you offer something of equal personal value for the meal you received.
At first I was really uncomfortable, wondering if it would be fair to exchange a yet to be determined "I Owe You" (IOU) for food? What could I give him of equal value? After all, his food is the best in the town!
We ended up writing our IOU's with promises of a book, some paintings and the offer of work in
a variety of ways if he needs it.
I think the idea isn't that the trade is "equal" so much as the importance of the kind of transaction. We put thought into our offer and we had an even greater understanding for the meals we ate.
We don't buy a lot, especially at this upcoming time of year. We don't give gifts at all in fact. The holiday time is spent enjoying each other's company and doing things together with family and friends. This is what seems most sensible.
Ilan is a good person. We are all lucky to have someone like this in our community.

Do you know that nearly every home in America contains a microwave? While microwaves make meals for busy people in several seconds, is microwaving food bad for you? Over the years, this standard household appliance(家用电器)has caused much discussion. Some argue microwaves kill nutrients in your food. Is that really true?
In reality, anytime food is exposed to heat, nutrients like vitamin C and some antioxidants (抗氧化剂) can be lost. But this applies to cooking in general, not just when you're using microwave. As is reported by WHO (World Health Organization), microwaving your food is a safe way to prepare it and it keeps the same level of nutrients as when you cook on a stove top or in the oven(烤箱).
When microwaving thicker food like meat products, WHO provides the following suggestions to ensure safe cooking methods: Cooking time will vary depending on the food itself and the power of the microwave, and will also be affected by the density of the item you are heating. Since microwave heating doesn't evenly(均匀地)go into thick food items, meat that's not thoroughly cooked may contain harmful microorganisms that make you sick. To kill harmful bacteria when cooking in the microwave, WHO suggests letting your food "rest" for several minutes after you finish warming it to allow the heat to give off throughout the item.
If you are thinking about microwaving your vegetables, Harvard Health Publishing suggests heating your food rapidly, in the shortest amount of time, and as little amount of water as possible. As far as vegetables are concerned, cooking them in water robs them of some of their nutritional value because the nutrients run out into the cooking water," states the report.

A.It will cause certain loss of some nutrients.
B.It only breaks the Vitamin C in the vegetables.
C.It will affect the flavor of the food.
D.It makes food unsafe to be eaten in general.
34.Which can be ignored when setting the cooking time?
A. The size of the food to be cooked.
B. The density of the food to be cooked.
C. The power of the microwave used.
D. The temperature of the surroundings.
35.How should you microwave vegetables?
A.Enough water is needed to wash off the bad bacteria.
B.Use as little time as possible to lock the nutrients.
C.Cut them into small pieces before putting them in.
D.Let them "rest" for several minutes after warming.

This is a tale of two friends, Jia Haixia and Jia Wenqi—one is blind; the other has no arms. On their own, the two are "disabled(残疾的)". But together, they are a powerful team that has changed part of their village into a rich, green forest.
Their story began in 2000, when Haixia, who was already blind in his right eye, lost his left one after an illness. Wenqi lost his arms in an accident when he was just three. Neither could find a job, so the two decided to team up. They rented some poor land and began to plant trees. In return, the local officials paid them a small fee(费用). Haixia and Wenqi never imagined that they would end up creating an environmental paradise(乐园).
Their forest now has over 10,000 trees, hundreds of birds and many other wild animals. In addition, it saves the village from river flooding during the rainy season. When the friends work together, they focus on their strengths not their disabilities. Their day begins at 7 a.m. when the blind Haixia carries Wenqi across the river to get to their worksite.
Since they cannot afford to buy young trees to plant, the two use branches from existing(目前存在的) trees. Haixia climbs to the treetop and with Wenqi's direction, selects the perfect branch. He then digs a hole and carefully plants it. Finally Wenqi waters the area.
Though hard-working, the men don't make much money. But as Wenqi puts it, "We stand on our own feet, so the fruits of our work taste sweeter."

Another person's enthusiasm (热忱) was what set me moving toward the success I have achieved. That person was my stepmother.
I was nine years old when she entered our home in the countryside of Virginia. My father introduced me to her with these words, "I would like you to meet the fellow who is well known for being the worst boy in this town and will probably start throwing rocks at you no later than tomorrow morning." My stepmother walked over to me, raised my head slightly upward, and looked at me right in the eye. Then she looked at my father and replied, "You are wrong. This is not the worst boy at all, but the smartest one who hasn't yet found a way to give out his enthusiasm. "
That statement (陈述) began a friendship between us. No one had ever called me smart. My family and neighbors had built me up in my mind as a bad boy. My stepmother changed all that. She changed many things. She persuaded my father to go to a dental(牙科的) school, from which he graduated with honors. She moved our family into the county seat (别墅), where my father's career could be more successful and my brother and I could be better educated.
When I turned fourteen, she bought me a secondhand typewriter(打字机) and told me that she believed that I could become a writer. I knew her enthusiasm, and I saw how it had already improved our lives. I accepted her belief and began to write for local newspapers and finally reached the goal she set for me. I wasn't the only beneficiary (受益人). My father became the wealthiest man in town. My brother and stepbrothers became a physician, a dentist, a lawyer, and a college president.

Students at Beijing's Yucai High School have to be very careful when playing football on the school's field. That's because there is a 100-year-old tree growing in the middle of it. And keeping their eye on the ball too much can result in a painful collision (撞击).
Building a football field around a tree sounds pretty stupid. But the school had no choice. It's reported that there are historic (有历史意义的) buildings all around Yucai High School, and this was the only space that could be used for a football field. Before starting working on the field, the school did ask to have the tree moved and planted somewhere else. However, they were told that it was hundreds of years old, and that it was a national treasure. Having it moved and planted somewhere else was too risky (有风险的) — they might damage or kill the tree. So they were left with no choice but to build the field around it.
Interestingly, Yucai High School is built on the grounds of Beijing's Royal Gardens of the Ming and Qing dynasties(朝代). A reporter for the Beijing News believes that the strangely-located tree is the oldest tree in the Chinese capital. That information has not been checked, but other people think the tree is only 100 years old.
Playing a serious game of football on this field cannot be very pleasant. The tree could "catch" the ball and change its direction from time to time. But the students have no choice but to train on the playground with the tree. Luckily, they can play on a different field in competitions with other schools.
32. If students play football on the school field, ____________.
A. they might run into a tree
B. they will have a good chance of winning
C. they will fall down more often
D. they can control the ball all the time
33. Why did the school build a football field around a tree?
A. Because the tree was as old as the school.
B. Because the school could only use that place.
C. Because students in the school liked the tree.
D. Because the tree had something to do with the city's history.
34. Why was the school not allowed to move and plant the tree somewhere else?
A. Because there was no other place for the tree.
B. Because it may have been dangerous for the tree and it might have died.
C. Because the tree was too big to be moved.
D. Because it was more meaningful to keep the tree where it was.
35. What do we know about the tree?
A. It's the oldest tree in the Chinese capital.
B. It was planted in Ming Dynasty.
C. Some believe it is only one-hundred years old.
D. Students will play on another field to protect it.

Like many, I felt pressure from my parents and teachers to go to university and study something academic. With top grades I received at the end of high school, I was almost able to enter any course of my pick. Yet the thought of spending the next few years facing the four walls of a classroom caused a lump (肿块) in my throat.
After a year majoring in photography at university, which was not just what I expected, I made the decision to take a break and go on a gap year. In fact, I gained more knowledge in the real world in four months than I did from my entire schooling, but most importantly, I learnt so much about myself.
One day my posted photos were noticed by Topdeck Travel, and they asked if they could use some of my travel pictures for their posters. This really was the beginning of my career. I began developing my relationship with Topdeck Travel, and before long, I got my first pay travel overseas to take photographs.
Soon I reached the point where I had to make a decision— either to play it safe, go back to university and settle down like everyone else, or to follow my heart and go my own way— a path with an uncertain future. I chose the latter, and it was the scariest and best decision I have ever made.
Five years after leaving school, I might not have a university degree, a well-paid job, a husband or a house with a white fence. Instead, I'm sitting at my office, with a cafe by a beach at Goa, India. As I stare past my laptop screen at the sun setting beyond the waves, a salty breeze touches my face.
To me, success is about pursuing my dreams and creating my own path instead of trying to follow someone else's. Somehow, I feel like my life is exactly where it is meant to be.

A. The knowledge about the real world.
B. Her paid overseas travel experience.
C. Realizing what she really wanted in her life.

A. She regrets not going back to university.
B. She gets less knowledge in the real world.
C She feels quite satisfied with her present life.
D. She misses the days working for Topdeck Travel.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中选出最佳选项。
A Happiness is for everyone. You don't need to care about those people who have beautiful houses with large gardens and swimming pools or those who have nice cars and a lot of money and so on. Why? Because those who have big houses may often feel lonely and those who have cars may want to walk on the country roads at their free time. In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When you are in trouble at school, your friends will help you; when you study hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking good care of your life and your health; when you get success, your friends will say congratulations to you; when you do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct it. And when you do something good to others, you will feel happy, too. All these are your happiness. If you notice them, you can see that happiness is always around you. Happiness is not the same as money. It is a feeling of your heart. When you are poor, you can also say you are very happy, because you have something else that can't be bought with money. When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly you are very happy, because you have more chances to challenge(挑战)yourself. So you cannot always say you are poor and you have bad luck. As the saying goes, life is like a revolving (旋转) door. When it closes, it also opens. If you take every chance you get, you can be a happy and lucky person.21. Happiness is for______. A. those who have large and beautiful houses B. those who have cars C. those who have a lot of money D. all people22. When you do something wrong,______. BDear Mrs. Smith, I was a student of yours in Grade Six, and I hope you still remember me. I'm writing this letter because I want to let you know that the school year with you were important and special to me. It made a big contribution to my life. I know I was very quiet in your class, and you never said much to me. But you did something that made a big difference in my life. You see, all through my first years in schools, I hated to read. Books were just words that had very little to do with me, and I was bored by them. I'll never forget the first day of Grade Six when you took out a thick book and began to read the story to our class. Your voice seemed to change with the people in the story, and you drew pictures in my mind as you read aloud. Since that day, I couldn't wait until lunch when you would read to the class. You read us all kinds of wonderful books. During the summer after my year in your class, I missed hearing the stories you would read. So one day I picked up a book and read it all on my own... When she heard her daddy say to her tearful mother,"Only a miracle can save him now," the little girl went to her bedroom and pulled her money from its hiding place and counted it carefully. She hurried to a drugstore(药店)with the money in her hand.
"And what do you want?" asked the salesman. "It's for my little brother," the girl answered. " He's really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle." "Pardon?" said the salesman.
"My brother Andrew has something bad growing in-side his head and my daddy says only a miracle can save him. So how much does a miracle cost?" "We don't sell a miracle here, child. I'm sorry," the salesman said with a smile.
"Listen, if it isn't enough, I can try and get some more. Just tell me how much it costs."
A well-dressed man heard it and asked,"What kind of a miracle does your brother need?"
"I don't know," she answered with her eyes full of tears. "He's really sick and mum says he needs an operation. But my daddy can't pay for it,so I have brought all my money."
