Recently, an article addressing the fairness of English exams in China's college entrance exam has caused a lot of discussion online. The article argued that removing English from the exam would turn it into something that only the rich could afford to learn, making it similar to learning the piano.

If this were to happen, it would be very difficult for students who want to work in industries such as finance or IT, which require English proficiency. While it may appear that students' academic burden is reduced by removing English from the exam, social inequality would actually worsen.

This is because China is currently experiencing rapid industrial upgrades and the connection with the rest of the world will only become more frequent and closer in the future, as opposed to the opposite.

However, if English remains as part of the high school exam, it can provide an opportunity for disadvantaged students to “turn their fate around”. In fact, the notion that English is irrelevant or not useful in the workplace is no longer valid. The probability of someone needing English in their job is far greater now than in the past.

The reality is that math, chemistry, and physics knowledge are applied less frequently in real-world scenarios than the utilization of the English language. Therefore, if one wants to rise above the crowd and achieve greatness, learning English is a fundamental prerequisite.
