One of the main creators of the World Wide Web,Sir Tim BernersLee has warned that the fast growth of the Internet is also creating serious problems.
He especially warns of false information being easily spread around the Internet,"A great danger is that it becomes a place where untruths start to spread more than truths,or it becomes a place which becomes increasingly unfair in some way." In particular, he mentions the phenomena of blogging.Blogging enables friends and contacts to easily spread information. However, he argues that people may too easily trust information mentioned in a blog. This inaccurate information can then easily become an accepted truth on the Internet.
He suggests that the most important development of the Internet will be in creating ways of allowing people to check the correctness of information by providing original sources.Sir Tim admits that this is an important challenge. It's interesting to note that Wikipedia(维基百科) has had to take steps to prevent false information from being added to the biographies of living people. It's easy for anybody to edit the open source. However, some people have pointed out that it has been used to spread false materials. In seeking to raise standards,Wikipedia has sought to stop the false materials.
At the same time there is a growing view that the Internet has had a great effect on the way millions of people work. The last two years have seen a big growth in the use of the Internet. There appears no slowdown in the growth of the Internet with increasing access in the developing countries.Sir Tim says another major challenge will be to provide free Internet for everybody.Sir Tim has recently launched a new joint initiative(倡议) between the University of Southampton and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to create the first degree in Web science. The two schools hope to raise the standards of web content.

A.The growth of the Internet is too fast.
B.The Internet has a side effect on young children.
C.The Internet companies compete against each other in an unfair way.
D.The false information spreads rapidly on the Internet.
2.According to the last paragraph, the purpose of the joint initiative is to________.
A.provide free Internet access to the poor countries
B.improve the reliability of online content
C.create the first degree in science and technology
D.enlarge the use of the Internet
3.We can infer from the text that________.
A.Sir Tim has built two schools recently
B.the Internet is harmful to the people's health
C.Sir Tim hopes everyone can use the Internet for free
D.the Internet develops slowly in the developing countries

One of the most significant parts of my high school career would be playing in the orchestra. I remember when I first started playing the viola (中提琴) in my school's program as an inexperienced fourth grader. As my interest in music grew, I decided to find a private instructor.
During my first lesson, I was surprised at what Dr. T was teaching — how to hold the viola and play open strings! To me, these were basic concepts I had long ago mastered. However, the following week, what I thought I had learned was completely disproven. With such high expectations, Dr. T criticized many aspects of my posture, intonation and bowing (音准和弓法). But as I became more familiar with my viola, Dr. T started assigning me actual compositions. Meanwhile, I became more and more interested in our school's ensemble (合奏组).
I first decided to become a section leader in middle school, when we were given the opportunity to try out for our ensemble's first and second chairs. During the first class, our conductor, Mrs. V, introduced us to a section leader's responsibilities. These duties included helping others with the concert music and setting a good example. After discussion, I decided to try out and started preparing the assigned piece. Every day, I would practice for at least 45 minutes. Needless to say, this was easier said than done. It required a lot of concentration and will power. Regardless, by the end of the week, I had become more familiar with the music.
To my surprise, the audition (试听) process was more pleasant than I had imagined. As I unpacked my viola, I started to doubt my decision. However, when I entered Mrs. V's homely office, I felt more relaxed. By the end of my audition, Mrs. V said that I had a good chance of becoming the principal violist! The next day, during orchestra, I learned that indeed, I had become our section's first chair.
4.Before the author studied under Dr. T, she ________.
A.had never played the viola
B.had expressed interest in music
C.had written some compositions
D.had been a promising young artist
5.The underlined word "disproven" in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by "________".
A.lazy B.wrong
C.foolishD.surprised
6.Which of the following can best describe the author?
A.Unusual and scholarly.
B.Selfcentered and proud.
C.Independent and optimistic.
D.Hardworking and determined.
7.When attending the audition, the author ________.
A.felt confident of succeeding
B.received some careers guidance
C.left a good impression on Mrs. V
D.remembered her first viola instructor

KBG84 is a oneofakind girl band in Japan consisting of 33 singing and dancing grannies, with an average age of 84. The oldest member, Haru Yamashiro, is 97 years old!
The new hand, based in the remote island of Kohama in Okinawa,is a huge hit in the country—so much so that the members are rather shocked by their success. Their first single—titled Come on and Dance, Kohama Island—has made it to the top of the charts, and they've just completed a sellout tour of Japan.
"We fell like stars in Tokyo," added 86yearold Hideko Kedamori. "Everyone in the audience had a big smile, which gave us the energy to sing our hearts out. We're blessed to have been born in Kohama. Our lyrics are about the island and nature—whales in the sea spouting or dolphins doing somersaults(空翻)."
Regardless of the lyrics, these elderly women are incredibly charming when they perform. Their energy and enthusiasm are amazing, considering their age. In fact, no one under the age of 80 is allowed into the band.
It turns out that the pop queens are blessed with incredible genes—Okinawan islanders have one of the highest life expectancies in the world. Their diet chiefly consists of vegetables and local purplefleshed sweet potatoes, with practically no added sugar. Menaka said she isn't particular about her diet.
"I look after my health by cleaning my home, wiping the floors, steaming rice," she said. "I stay in the shade when it's too hot. I don't want to get burnt. I have to take care of my skin—I'm still young at heart!"
8.What's the aim of writing the passage?
A.To tell us KBG84 is the best band in Japan.
B.To introduce a popular band in Japan.
C.To show why KBG84 is so popular.
D.To prove the elderly can become stars.
9.How did the members of KBG84 feel when they succeeded?
A.Very surprised. B.Rather calm.
C.A little proud. D.Fairly content.
10.What are the lyrics of KBG84 about?
A.The women's interests.
B.Inspiring stories.
C.Kohama and nature.
D.Whales and dolphins' food.
11.What Menaka said in the last paragraph suggests________.
A.she keeps fit by doing housework
B.taking exercise every day brings her joy
C.she likes high temperature very much
D.her good skin is what she takes pride in
D
I plan to remember this year's vacation season with just two words: Never again. Never again will I take all my technology along.
When I first visited my inlaws' cabin in Ontario's north woods 35 years ago, there was no such thing as the Internet. The nearest telephone was one mile away, and we were beyond the reach of television. Our media diet consisted of a batterypowered radio. I know I risk sounding like an aging crank (怪人), but the life then was simple.
Now we're burdened with modern civilization. The cabin is just close enough to civilization to get a strong cellphone signal. Instead of browsing dogeared summerhouse mystery novels, this year we browsed the Internet. Instead of long evenings of poker, we checked our Twitter and updated our Facebook pages.
For several years, I kept my Internet addiction under control by using inconvenient technology: an old laptop and a slow dialingup connection. But this year, the combination of a new iPad and that neat WiFi turned out to be hard to resist. The iPad beckoned (吸引) us silently from the picnic table: What harm could it be to give the email a quick check? But once that touchscreen lights up, who can say no to it?
Access to the Web is unquestionably a wonderful thing. I love having a bottomless library at my fingertips; I love having the world's newspapers on my electronic doorstep. I love being able to pay bills and make airplane reservations online.
And that's the point: It's important not to let the convenience of the Internet get in the way of simple beauties. That's not the Internet's fault. It's ours.
The first step toward recovery is admitting you have a problem. My problem isn't the Internet; it's learning how to limit the time I spend on it.
12.How did the author find the life in the cabin 35 years ago?
A.Peaceful.B.Convenient.
C.Boring.D.Miserable.
13.In the summer vacation this year, the author spent most time ________.
A.creating a Facebook page
B.playing poker with his family
C.browsing the Internet with his iPad
D.reading summerhouse mystery novels
14.Paragraph 5 suggests that the author ________.
A.has gained enough computer skills
B.advises people to use the Internet often
C.chooses to go without the Internet access
D.appreciates the advantages of the Internet
15.What might be the most suitable title for the text?
A.How an iPad stoles my summer vacation
B.How to avoid using technology on vacation
C.How to spend a meaningful vacation at a cabin
D.Technology influences my summer vacation positively

Dear Bob,
As an exchange student, how are you getting along with your classmates? Here, I'm emailing you to invite you to a social practice this weekend.
On Sunday, we're scheduled to take part in some voluntary work, in which we'll help clean the local nursing home. Our main task is to pick up litter for them. Tiring as it may be, it is well worth trying because you can communicate with local people in Chinese.
If you'd like to join us, please inform me before Friday and I can make some arrangements for you. Besides, do remember to wear a pair of gloves to protect your hands if you come!
Look forward to your participation!
Yours,
Li Hua
