时文摘要:
新冠肺炎疫苗的研制正在如火如荼的进行中,但疫苗即使被研制出来,也不能用于儿童,因为他们没有在这个年龄组进行测试。
The research for a COVID-19 vaccine(疫苗) for children is only just beginning. Some doctors are worried they may not know if any vaccine works for young children in time for the next school year.
Older adults may be most at risk from the coronavirus(冠状病毒), but ending the COVID-19 will require vaccine for children, too. Last week, a company was allowed to test its vaccine in U.S. children as young as 12 years old. It is one of only a few tests around the world to consider if any of the vaccines made for adults also can protect children.
"I just thought the more people they have to do tests on, the quicker they can put out a vaccine and people will be safe and healthy," said 16-year-old Katelyn Evans. She became the first teenager to get in the test.
Several possible vaccines are in studies in tens of thousands of adults. Scientists hope they will make sure that some of them are safe and useful enough for widespread use. But when the first vaccines are ready, they are impossible to be allowed for children. Vaccines cannot be given to youngsters unless they have been tested in their age group. This is a big problem to reopen schools and restart other activities.
"The public doesn't understand that," said Doctor Evan Anderson. He has been pushing for COVID-19 vaccine tests for children. While Anderson is pleased by the study in teenagers, he finds it "very worrying" that children younger than 12 may not have a vaccine by a year from now.
