I took a job as a receptionist for a veterinarian (兽医) almost five decades ago. As an enthusiastic animal lover, I couldn’t bear to see any creature in pain.

At the end of my first week, we are closing the office for the day   1   a young man ran up to us holding a severely injured Doberman puppy in his arms and   2   us to save his life.

The doctor and I ran back into the   3   room. The vet worked   4   for what seemed like hours, stitching(缝合)him back together again.
