Day 1
Rights belong to all
Do you know what human rights are? They are basic rights that belong to every person in the world. They include the right to life, freedom from slavery (奴役), the right to work and education, and many more. China has played a leading role in protecting human rights. On Oct 13, China was elected (选举) as a member of the Human Rights Council of the United Nations. The country has made great achievements in human rights since 1949, Xinhua noted. For example, Chinese people who lived before 1949 lived through war and poverty (贫困). Average life expectancy (人均预期寿命) during that time was around 35 years. After 70 years, China can feed (养活) more than 1.3 billion people and provide jobs for 770 million people. The country's life expectancy rose to 77.3 years in 2019, CGTN noted. As for the right to education, Chinese people spent less than one year in school in 1949. Today, we have nine years of compulsory (义务的) education. Access (使用权) to the internet is also a basic human right. As of June, 67 percent of China's population had access to the internet. That's 5 percent higher than the global average.

Day 2
Helping needy farmers
Jack Berne is a student from Sydney, Australia. He got a lot of attention after starting A fiver (五美元) for a Farmer, which helped raise 1 million dollars (around 7 million yuan) for drought-affected (受旱灾影响的) Australian farmers in 2018. Berne said he saw a video at school that showed how droughts have affected children and animals. This made him want to do something about it.
Now, the 12-year-old boy is one of 430 children who are taking part in a global campaign (活动) for Lego called Rebuild the World. The children helped to build an installation (装置) in Denmark – a 4-meter-wide globe (地球仪) made of Lego bricks. The globe, which took 2,700 hours to build, features (以……为特征) buildings designed by the children. Berne's creation, which he calls Farming Home, is a farm that has everything people need to live comfortably – a stream (溪流) for water, crops for food, and a windmill (风车) for power. "To think that something I created in my living room is now part of a huge installation at the Lego House in Denmark is just crazy," Berne said. Berne is continuing his efforts (努力) to help Australian farmers. "We asked people to bring in an 'all-Australian' lunch. I asked people to buy in-season produce (农产品), check their labels (标签) and buy Australian products," Berne said.

4. From the last two paragraphs, we know that _____.A. many Australians work on farmsB. A fiver for a Farmer will continue in the futureC. Berne wants to help farmers make more moneyD. Berne decided to help people in other areas
Day 3
Get your candy safely during the pandemic
Halloween is just around the corner! People in the West celebrate it on Oct 31 every year. Children usually go trick-or-treating (不给糖就捣蛋) – they knock on their neighbors' doors and ask for candy. But because of COVID-19, many cities have advised people not to go trick-or-treating this year. As health experts said, the virus spreads more easily when people have close contact (接触) with each other. But this will not stop Halloween fans from keeping the tradition going. For example, Elizabeth Lusty from London came up with an idea for her two children. She and her neighbors will put boxes of candy in their front yards. Then they'll plan a safe route (路线) so that children can take the candy without coming into contact with others. Andrew Beattie from the US also got creative. He and his 6-year-old daughter made a contact-free candy chute (滑道). It stretches (延伸) from the family's front door to the sidewalk. They can send candy down the chute to trick-or-treaters outside. The idea became popular online and many people are doing the same. "This is something that the kids will enjoy and not think of it as 'I'm doing this to prevent (预防) disease (疾病),'" Beattie told CNN. "They're doing it to have a good time, and we need that now."
1. This year, trick-or-treating is not suggested because _____.A. it's not healthy for children to eat candyB. neighbors will not give out candy to kidsC. many cities will ban the activityD. close contact may allow COVID-19 to spread
2. How can kids collect candy from Andrew's house?A. They collect candy as usual.B. Andrew will hand it to them.C. They can take it from a box.D. They collect candy from a chute.
3. Paragraphs 3 and 4 explain _____. A. what Halloween is usually likeB. new ways for kids to trick-or-treatC. what people are doing to stop trick-or-treatersD. how neighbors stay in touch with each other
4. What can we learn from Beattie?A. COVID-19 might spread quickly on Halloween.B. People need trick-or-treating these days.C. Trick-or-treating will not be fun this year.D. Kids don't care about COVID-19.
Day 4
Why do these bugs love blood?
What does our blood taste like to mosquitoes? Do they bite us because they think our blood tastes good? Scientists at Rockefeller University in the US have found the answer. Mosquitoes feed on not only blood, but also flower nectar (花蜜). But when they drink blood, they have to use their stylets (口针) to pierce (刺破) our skin – otherwise (否则), they just use their lips to drink.
The scientists fed mosquitoes a fake (假的) blood drink and looked at their neuron (神经元) activity. They found that neurons in their stylets became active only when the fake drink had four specific components (成分) – glucose (葡萄糖), sodium chloride (氯化钠), sodium bicarbonate (碳酸氢钠) and ATP (三磷酸腺苷). The former three components make blood taste a little salty and a little sweet, according to Leslie Vosshall, one of the researchers. But ATP is different from the others, as humans cannot taste it. Although it's impossible to say how it tastes to humans, it creates a tasty flavor for mosquitos. The findings have given scientists a new idea - they could use this against mosquitoes. They could make a type of drug (药) that changes how our blood tastes. Mosquitoes would quickly lose interest in our blood. "If mosquitoes weren't able to tell the taste of blood, in theory (理论上) they couldn't spread disease," said Veronica Jove, another researcher.
1. What do we know from Paragraph 2?A. Mosquitoes smell by using their stylets.B. Mosquitoes use their lips to drink blood.C. Mosquitoes drink flower nectar.D. Mosquitoes prefer blood to flower nectar.
2. Through the study, scientists found that _____.A. mosquitoes will die if they drink fake bloodB. mosquitoes like specific blood components C. mosquitoes can tell fake blood apart from real bloodD. ATP is tasteless to mosquitoes
3. Paragraph 5 is mainly about _____.A. a way to prevent mosquito bitesB. a way to change the taste of our bloodC. a new drug that can kill mosquitoesD. a new type of food mosquitoes like to eat
